         The Prince Edward County South Shore is internationally
          recognized as an Important Bird Area:

  • 298 species of birds have been recorded in a single year.
  • As many as 70,000 dark-eyed juncos have been seen during fall migration.
  • Over 1% of the world’s population of greater scaup, long-tailed ducks and white-winged scoters have been observed in the waters off the South Shore.
  • Up to 2,000 hawks per day migrate over the South Shore.
  • In the fall of 2012, Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory was the first Migration Monitoring Network station in Canada to band 10,000 birds.
