Monarch Butterflies

Monarch Butterflies

The monarch butterfly is unique in the world for its amazing migration from Canada to Mexico and back again.

The monarch butterfly is a species of special concern in Canada and internationally. To help preserve this species, Mexico, the United States and Canada have created International Monarch Butterfly Reserves. Prince Edward National Wildlife Area is one of just three Canadian Reserves. Millions of butterflies gather here, feeding and waiting to migrate. Because the butterflies are so small and vulnerable, they can only migrate when the conditions are perfect: 60% – 80% cloud cover, temperature about 20 degrees Celsius and moderate northwest wind.
