A poet’s lament

A Voice for the Turtle

Dead birds cannot sing—
their melodies lost to winds
which rouse high towers
to turn smooth blades of hard steel
that churn songs and soft feathers.

What will children hear
or see? Fields without Blandings?
Forests without trees?
No songbirds. No chorus frogs.
Only a harsh hush, man-made.
